It was 9 years ago when I initially dreamed of taking this photograph during my first visit in 2014 to Iceland - the first time I ever saw these incredible basalt columns. Though unfortunately, I never did get the chance to capture this image during the 9 years since, because every time I returned it was either too stormy, freezing, or there were tons of tourists around (and I get too shy to create my self portraits in front of lots of people!)...
But at long last... during midsummer of 2023, the time of year when the midnight sun shines on in the great north, I returned to this place on a quiet, calm night... and I had this entire location to myself. I shot this self portrait at 2am, taking my time to marvel at these incredible natural features, climbing up the columns and pressing my hands and face into the cool and ancient lava stone... formed of the heart of Ancient Earth herself. This was a moment I'll remember forever: Such a feeling of quiet serenity and connection with the earth, here in the middle of the night. I swear I could hear her heartbeat.
